If you’re running a home service company or local business, having your business verified on Google is a must. It’s like planting your flag in the online world—letting customers know you’re legit, trustworthy, and ready to serve them. But what happens if your Google Business Profile is unverified, or worse, suddenly requires reverification? Don’t sweat it! This guide will walk you through the steps to get your business verified (or reverified) and keep those online leads rolling in.
Verification is how Google knows you’re the real deal. Without it, your business won’t show up on Google Maps or in local search results, and that’s a big problem for companies that rely on local traffic—like HVAC contractors, plumbers, or roofing companies. Think of Google Business Verification as your golden ticket to visibility.
By verifying your business, you’re telling Google (and your customers) that you exist, you’re operating legitimately, and you’re open for business.
First, head over toGoogle Business Profile and either create a new profile or claim an existing one if it’s already been set up. Make sure you’ve got all your business info handy, like your name, address, phone number, and business hours.
Once your profile is set up, Google will give you a few options to verify it. Here are the most common methods:
Launching Google Paid Ads (cost-per-click Google Ads) to get verified won’t work. An Agency or yourself, can launch them and still have an unverified Profile. Google will still send them to your website so that’s one way to continually get visits and possible leads, but your profile and all the important information you need to know will still be locked behind the video verification process. At the end of this article is a summary of how to perform a proper video verification to get your business relisted and verified, but first find out why you are unverified to ensure you don’t have to continually reverify your business.
If your business address doesn’t match Google’s guidelines or can’t be verified, your profile might get unverified. Wrong or inconsistent phone numbers, websites, or other contact details can also cause this issue. Additionally, continually changing this information presents a “flag” in Google’s algorithm that your business is not trustworthy. Just think about it… who changes their phone number and/or address continually unless to hide something or try to trick Google into more leads?
This is why it is important to partner with Google Business Profile experts like our agency or thoroughly educate yourself on how to optimize your profile once, manage it carefully, and only make changes and updates that are legitimate.
If you have duplicate listings for the same business, Google might unverify one or both profiles. It’s best to permanently close down the duplicate and even attempt a merge. Just be aware that merging can sometimes prompt a re-verification via a video as described below. This means you can still be found online but your rankings will begin to fall within 1-2 weeks and your business will show that you are unverified. Either way, get it fixed and fast.
Listing your company as a gutter cleaning business but then not offering them or having multiple people complain you don’t offer the business will get you removed. If you’re a roofing company but you don’t clearly state that you are solely a shingle or metal roofing company can also get unverified. The key is to have your category be honest, and if you are a gutter or roofing business but only offer a type of that industry, to clearly state that information within your business description.
Many agencies will create endless “products” and “services” with the specific city name in it, then link it to your website landing page. This is a good tactic, but if Google finds that you don’t offer that service to that city or the landing page goes missing, it can flag your page. Remember, Google’s sole job is to be a solution finder, If someone has a problem, they search online and should find the right company within the right area, that offers it and all its phone numbers, addresses, links, and pages are right.
If your profile shows no activity, like no reviews, updates, or posts, Google might think it’s not maintained. It may even send an email with tips and tricks, this isn’t to be helpful, it’s actually to give you the heads up that you are on the edge of unverification. So make sure that you update your hours when you’re going to be closed, and post new updates about your business.
Just use this script and fill in the blanks to easily walk through the video process.
